From July to September 2026, the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Kasetsart University Chalermphrakiat Sakon Nakhon Province Campus (KUCSC) hosted Dhruv Melwani, a computer science student from India, for a three-month IAESTE research internship. Dhruv came in with a background in data science and left having learned to ask engineering questions of it: how a concrete mixture should be described to a model, when a validation score is measuring skill rather than memorisation, and how much uncertainty an engineer should carry into a decision. The work produced two manuscripts, with Dhruv as first author on both. At his closing seminar, a room of civil engineers, most of whom do not work with machine learning, stayed with a talk on model evaluation and kept asking questions. That is a measure of how well he explained it. Our experience is that a short exchange can produce real research. It needs a question worth answering, a student willing to cross into an unfamiliar field, and a lab prepared to treat the visit as research rather than observation.
