Work

I was at the Olympus research and development facility, where I worked with a group of engineers designing a new medical device. I conducted various tests on the device, including thermal tests, and EMC (electromagnetic compatibility) tests. It definitely had an impact on how I view such work and the responsibilities that come with testing such equipment.

Experience

The overall experience was terrific. I stayed in a company run dormitory in western Tokyo with my fellow IAESTE interns working at the same place. We made many trips together to central Tokyo and the surrounding area, which was amazing, as I had never lived in such a large city before. The food was, of course, amazing. Its no wonder Tokyo is called the culinary capital of the world. IAESTE Japan also held a variety of events, including a weekend trip to Nagoya, where we toured various companies based there and met many other interns from around the world. I made many new friends during my stay and I believe it was an invaluable experience for me.

During my internship, I definitely gained a better understanding of what I wish to do in the future, and it also gave me a new perspective on my studies. Up until then, I had never seen how the concepts I was learning in school could be used in "the real world". Doing an internship such a large and influential company such as Olympus has inspired me to learn more about the applications of the knowledge I am gaining.
