Work
Research on Point-of-use water treatment methods, focusing on Clay pot water purifiers. The project made me think more about the issues of the developing world and made me more committed to trying to help to solve them.
Experience
I lived in the dormitory with local students. It is not the most comfortable place to live, but it was very good for me. The constant lack of electricity was a bit annoying first, but it taught me how lucky we are back home with our reliable system. For weekends, we usually went to Benin City, because that is a better city to be in. Sometimes we participated in planned trips, or we were just hanging out in Benin City. I think the best place was the Idanre hills, it was one of the best places I've ever been to. I really liked the food as well. Nigerian food is very spicey and mainly consist of rice, cassava, beans, plantain, meat and fish. Nigerians also eat a lot of bread, but the bread was not the best in my opinion, it is just too sweet. Luckily enough, there is a mall in Effurun where we could buy quite good french bread (and almost everything, which you can in a European shop). In FUPRE there are a lot of local women (mamas) selling home-cooked meals which are very cheap (like 1 euro for a full meal), and very good.
Discover
This internship really changed a lot of things inside me. I got much more aware of what is important in life, and I learned to appreciate much more what I have. Since this internship, I can handle difficulties in life much easier, because I got an insight into real difficulties in life, and I can always see my problems less serious.
