Work
In Germany, I worked at an architectural firm called she- architekten. I delved into the intricate workings of architecture with a particular focus in project conceptualisation, preparation of outline, scheme and detail drawings of a residential flat. I worked alongside experienced architects in Hamburg gaining practical skills and exposure to innovative projects, in areas of urban planning and historic preservation. I visited a construction site several times that offered hands-on experience and got exposed to innovative design techniques while experiencing German culture firsthand. I also attended several art exhibitions in Hamburg with my colleagues. Living in Germany provided valuable insights into European architecture and design principles.
Experience
The unexpected experiences, however, were what really defined my experience in the middle of the professional development and technical difficulties. I took comfort in the friendship of my fellow interns who came from all over the world while I adapted to life in an unfamiliar country. We forged relationships that cut over boundaries and broadened our viewpoints as a team, overcoming linguistic and cultural obstacles. With my internship in Germany, I had the chance to try different cuisines of German culture, with the most palatable being eintopf and brot during winter. I had the chance to tour different cities in Germany with a memorable one being a visit to the BMW headquarters and Allianz Arena in Munich.
Discover
When I think back on my time in Germany, I am appreciative of the friendships I made and the priceless lessons I acquired. My internship surpassed all of my expectations by pushing me to accept diversity, encourage collaboration, and widen my perspectives. I would advise anyone thinking about doing a similar trip to grab hold of the chance, embrace the unknown, and set out on a life-changing journey that will mould your future in ways you never would have thought imaginable. I am incredibly appreciative of the chance to engage and communicate with the diverse population both inside and outside of she-architekten in order to acquire and possibly impart the knowledge that will enable us to improve both my nation and the entire world, even with small efforts from each of us.
