Work

I was responsible for researching on jet engine development of the current jet engine manufacturing industry. The key tasks were to study the current market of jet engine and their development history, design features and specifications. I had to construct ways of improving existing features and propose a design model of an innovative jet engine for commercial airliners. I was also required to prepare a presentation and write a project proposal at the end of the internship.

Experience

During this internship, I utilized three different resources to obtain information and knowledge for this internship. First, I watched the interview and introduction video about the latest jet engine technology from the jet engine manufacturers official website. Those videos provided me a great understanding towards the recent jet engine development and the future products. Second, I read numerous journal articles and books about the fan blades design, jet engine gearbox, combustion chamber design and mechanism, aerodynamic properties of airfoils, as well as several innovative jet engines design nowadays. I have gained the knowledge from these literature about the process and parameters for designing a jet engine especially turbofan engine. Meanwhile, all the literature were obtained from google scholar and Hong Kong Polytechnic library website. Third, I read several news articles about the release of the new jet engine concepts of different manufacturer. By reading those news articles, I was able to realize the latest jet engine technology that the industry is interested in. As a result, I combined the concept of UltraFan turbofan engine of Rolls Royce and geared turbofan engine (GTF) of Pratt & Whitney to create my geared ultrahigh bypass ratio two spools turbofan engine.While I was constructing the 3D model of my conceptual design, I used Solid Work 2022 software to build it and my design can be visualized by the picture below.

This internship is a meaningful and valuable learning experience for me since it is my first internship. Although it is a virtual internship which requires great self-discipline, I have learnt the things for example, the real jet engine design process, that cannot get from school. Also, this internship provided me a chance to read research journals which has broadened my horizon. It made me familiar with the jet engine industry. Moreover, I was able to apply the knowledge obtained from the school on actual design. Before getting involved into this internship, I have not learnt aerodynamics yet. By joining this internship, I tasted the impact and importance of aerodynamics which enhanced my interest in studying it.
