Work
I worked on modelling and simulations of patient-specific aortic valve replacements. I was able to run an independent research study on the simulation methods and helped to develop a new modelling technique for mitral valve replacements. It was incredible to be working on cutting-edge technology that was having a direct impact on people's health. The experience I gained from this internship helped get me my next job after graduating!
Experience
The accommodation was nice, though very European (which, to a Canadian, means small). Adapting to the lifestyle was tricky at first but ultimately helped me to be more flexible and adaptable in future situations. The IAESTE Ghent team was fabulous and planned bi-weekly sports events as well as weekly international evenings so all the interns could teach each other about their countries. The food was amazing and I joined as many trips and outings as I could. I managed to travel to 6 different countries during my 4-month stay! And the lifelong friends I made along the way were a priceless bonus.
Discover
I discovered my love of travel and my passion for biomedical engineering. It helped open my eyes to working with a diverse set of colleagues and gave me the motivation to finish my studies so I could get out there and start working with such amazing people on such incredible projects. My experience with IAESTE Belgium and my personal travel across Europe led me to join IAESTE and start a local committee at my university. Since then, I have gone on another internship (8 months in Austria), joined the IAESTE Canada National Committee, and attended IAESTE conferences around the world, including JUMP in Tunisia and the 2019 Annual Conference in Cyprus! IAESTE has made me passionate about travelling and about spreading its incredible message across the world. I believe IAESTE is one of the best steps we can take toward worldwide understanding and acceptance of cultural diversity. Join IAESTE, do an internship. It will change your life forever. I promise you will be so glad that you did.
