Eligibility requirements are: Enrollment: Applicants must be enrolled at an accredited four-year U.S. university in a full-time Bachelor’s, Master’s or Ph.D. program during the application process. Recent graduates are eligible for the program, but are only able to intern in certain countries due to visa regulations. International students are welcome to apply, as long as they are enrolled at a U.S. university. International students must be enrolled before, during, and after their internships.Academic Standing: Applicants should have attained junior-level standing or above by the time the internship begins. Sophomores may also apply, but should include some relevant internship or lab experience as part of their application. Graduating seniors and recent graduates (start date of internship must be within one-year of graduation) are only eligible for work authorization in certain countries, and are encouraged to speak with the program team before submitting an application.Major: Applicants must be enrolled in a technical field of study, including, but not limited to, all engineering fields, computer science, architecture, natural and physical sciences, or agricultural sciences.Age: Applicants are typically between the ages of 19 and 30, but non-traditional students are encouraged to speak to the program team about eligibility.Language: Applicants must be fluent in English, as all IAESTE internships are conducted in English.

Arrival & pick up Arrow dropdown

Details of what you should do on arrival will be provided, including a contact person who will meet you at the train station or airport. On the first day of your internship you will be accompanied to the city hall to register, to a bank to open up your bank account and afterwards to your workplace to meet with your supervisor.

During Internship Arrow dropdown

Your supervisor at work will guide you during the whole internship. The working hours will be set by the employer. You will be added to our Trainee Whatsapp group and will be able to communicate with all members and trainees that are currently in the city. We will organise events during the week and/or weekend and inform you about all summer reception events. If you have any questions, pelase don't hestiate to ask the local IAESTE executives.

- You must register on the Exchange Platform, further called the EP (iaeste.net)- Log in to the EP and complete your profile as per instructions available on the platform and submit your profile for verification.- Upon payment of the registration fee your profile is verified and you can log in and see all available internships.- If you are interested in an internship, please check that you fulfil all requirements. Please note that there are different types of internship offers: Global internships - these internship are open worldwide and students from other countries can be nominated at the same time and the final decision is up to the employer. One student can apply for two global internships at the same time, given that they are not in the same country.Exchange internships - these internships are open only to one country and your nomination will not be compared with students from other countries. Only one application is allowed at the same time when applying for an exchange internship.- If you wish to apply you can submit an application in the EP. Please include your CV and transcript of records.Internships are available throughout the entire year, with a peak from January to March right after our Annual Exchange Conference.

Nomination and Selection Process:Once you expressed interest in an internship and are assigned to an offer, you are asked to pay the USD 250 nomination fee (which is non-refundable, and charged per application) and upload all relevant documents to the Exchange Platform.After receipt of your payment and pre-screening of your documents we will forward those documents directly to the receiving IAESTE Committee and the employer or if necessary get in touch with you to improve the quality of your application documents.Nomination: Students who have been nominated for an international internship will be informed via email. Before receiving the acceptance documents, you are required to make the acceptance fee payment of USD 900.

The nomination is a compilation of documents based on which the employer makes the final decision whether or not to accept you.The nomination should include the following documents, make sure you have uploaded all of them in the EP:- Student Nomination Form (plus Attachment if not medically fit)- Cover Letter- CV - Transcript of records (including the grading scale)- The IAESTE Language Certificate /TOEFL /Other related examination records (if English is not your first language)- Certificate of Enrolment from the University - Letter of Recommendation (highly recommended) - Scanned copy of Passport For all Architecture internships, a portfolio is required.If the nomination does not fulfill the above mentioned criteria, the nomination will be send back for corrections.Before the nomination is forwarded the program fee must be paid.

Acceptance & Departure Arrow dropdown

Once the nomination is completed and fully uploaded to the EP, it will be shared with the receiving country and the employer. The receiving IAESTE committee or the employer might want to conduct an interview with you. If so, you should keep us in the copy of any emails.Unless you were contacted by the receiving committee or employer directly, you are not allowed to contact them. If you do, you might be excluded from the IAESTE internship program.Once the nomination has been shared with the receiving committee, you should receive the final decision in max. 5 weeks. If not, you are allowed to cancel your nomination and apply for another internship.Once accepted, follow the instructions of the receiving committee. You should confirm that you wish undertake the internship within 2 weeks. If a visa or work permit is required, you should start the process as soon as possible. All students are required to purchase insurance which covers the duration of their internship. Please submit your arrival details on time so that the receiving country can make all necessary arrangements to welcome you.If your nomination is rejected, you can apply for another internship, request entry into the global talent pool, or request a refund of the participation fee.

During & After Internship Arrow dropdown

IAESTE supports the intern during the internship by helping with the reception and also organizing the social events. In case of any problems you can always reach us for some tips or in case of emergency. After the internship you'll be asked to complete a feedback form to help us to evaluate your internship as we are always trying to improve our performance and reach the highest standards. The report should be submitted within 30 days after the end of the internship. Afterwards, you will be issued with a certificate that confirms your participation in the program.

Requirements to offer an internship to a foreign student Arrow dropdown

Eligibility:The host must be an established business in operation for at least one year and provide their Federal Employer Identification Number (EIN). Cultural Vistas may consider the number of staff, incorporation date, company history, current business activities, and financials in determining whether the host organization meets our requirements for sponsorship. Hosts must have at least 5 full-time staff on site and interns cannot be remote more than 2 days a week. The host must not use the intern/trainee program for ordinary employment or staffing and must not displace American workers with international interns/trainees.The host must not intend to assist the participant in remaining in the United States beyond the authorized program dates or change status to another type of visa.The host must be able to prove they have a valid workers compensation insurance policy. If exempted by law from having insurance, proof of exemption must be submitted to Cultural Vistas.All participant applicants must be interviewed by either the US host or the sponsor. For the purposes of the J-1 visa, such interviews must be documented and be performed via web cam, videoconference, phone, or in-person. Hosts will confirm these details in the Host Company Application.The J-1 intern's training must take place for at least 32 hours per week.The host must provide continuous on-site supervision of participants and their program activities and provide feedback to facilitate the participant’s development. Cultural Vistas requires a staff to participant ratio of 10-1 in most cases. Interns must have on-site supervision when in the office.The host is expected to provide the participant with a real life experience in his or her career field as normally practiced in the United States, including exposure to various aspects of the business or occupation. Activities should be designed with the participant’s career level, field of study, and interests in mind. Programs should be clearly defined and correspond with the expectations, requirements, and activities specified in the training plan. Program elements should not be changed without approval from Cultural Vistas.The host must abide by all federal, state, and local labor and wage laws, including those relating to withholding taxes. J-1 interns are responsible for federal, state, and local taxes, but not FICA (Social Security/Medicare) and FUTA (Unemployment). J-1 interns are required to obtain a Social Security Number in order to be paid wages. Participants should not be considered independent contractors and compensation cannot be based on tips.The host should provide or make available opportunities for the participant to learn about American culture both through office related events and activities outside the office.The host must ensure participants notify us of their arrival and complete all required evaluation forms.The host should provide orientation upon arrival to ensure the participant is prepared for participation in the program and clearly explain company rules, policies, and any benefits to which the participant is entitled.

Offering an internship to a foreign student Arrow dropdown

Submit Intern Request: As a host company, you will submit a description of the internship position and what type of student you are searching for.Review: IAESTE United States will send you the application received from our international counterparts for your review.Selection: IAESTE United States can assist in coordinating a Skype/telephone interview with the candidate. The host employer can approve the candidate for an internship or request a different candidate.Internship: IAESTE United States provides bureaucratic support throughout the visa application process and during the intern’s time in the United States. Most internships take place during the summer, but please contact us if you have internships available at other times as well.FEES: In general, host employers are required to pay the program fee and a stipend for the intern, which should cover the cost of living in the host city (housing, transportation, and food). The program fee covers the administrative costs of J-1 visa sponsorship, including issuing the DS-2019 form (Certificate of Eligibility).The intern must be insured under Cultural Vistas health insurance policy. Some employers offer to cover this fee on behalf of their intern. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and the administrator of IAESTE United States, Cultural Vistas depends on program fees to offset the costs of administering programs. All interns must be paid by the employer. On the Offer of Training form, please state the salary offered, which should cover living expenses in the host city.

Students' profiles will be presented to you via the Exchange Platform (EP) - you will see all documents prepared by the student (nomination package). Then, you will select the student that fulfills your requirements the most and you can accept him/her for the internship. If you have any additional questions regarding the students' nomination you can always contact us. You can also send a request for clarification and/or additional documents (eg. documents confirming skills, etc.) via the EP directly. You can also request direct interviews with the candidates before taking a decision.After confirming an offer, you and the student must complete the Cultural Vistas visa sponsorship application in a separate portal to secure the J-1 Visa necessary for the student to enter the U.S. Cultural Vistas provides the documentation necessary for the intern to request the J-1 Visa at a U.S. embassy or consulate abroad. This process, including applications and visa interviews, can take an additional month or two and is subject to appointment availability.

Pre Arrival Logistics Arrow dropdown

After a student is accepted, he/she is contacted by the receiving committee to begin arrival preparations, eg. they receive a booklet with information about the country, the common way to reach the country, if the location of work is far from big cities, how to get there etc. You, as the employer, may be asked to support with some special documentation to be presented for visa/work permit application (if required). It is important to set a date to receive the intern and prepare in advance the first day at work. It is expected from the employer to introduce the intern to the work and to the team the intern will work with.

During & After Internship Arrow dropdown

It is expected that you are in regular contact with the student, ideally to assign a supervisor to guide him/her during the process. You are responsible for providing the intern with basic material for work: desk, computer etc. and if this is not possible, to mention it in advance so the student can be prepared. It is highly appreciated to have regular communication between our office and yourselves. After the internship you we will ask you to complete a feedback form to share your experience with us.
